Essential Fatty Acids

Discover one of the most beneficial supplements you can take
By: Dr. Christina R. Campbell

EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) are the good fats. They are essential because our body does not manufacture them and therefore they must be obtained through our diet daily for optimal health and well-being. The most important EFAs are Omega-3 and Omega-6s. In general, the typical American diet contains too few Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s fall into 2 categories: plant derived (flaxseed) or marine derived (fish oil). Omega-6s are found in borage oil and evening primrose oil.

Why Supplement with EFAs?

Unless one eats daily portions of cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, or herring, they are not getting the amount of EFAs necessary for good health. The benefits of these fatty acids are surpassed by few other supplements. By providing natural anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular support, neurotransmitter balance, hormone regulation, and connective tissue repair, EFAs alieviate many ailments.

What Conditions Benefit?

Conditions that have seen improvement with the regular usage of EFAs include: dry skin, eczema, hair loss, depression, mood swings, reproductive problems, heart or cholesterol problems, memory loss, fatigue, bipolar disorder, cognitive development, PMS, pregnancy, lactation, dry eyes, and weight loss.

How Do I take EFAs?

Flaxseed Oil is an easy way to get regular doses of Omega-3 plant derived fatty acids. I recommend 1 Tbsp per day as a standard adult dosage. Omega-3 from stable fish oils can be conviently taken in a non-odorous softgel form, 1000-1500mg per day. Evening Primrose Oil, a valuable source of Omega-6 fatty acids, can be taken at a therapeutic dose of 1500mg per softgel capsule. Taste, freshness, and purity are essential when choosing an EFA product. Select a high-quality supplement and check the label to ensure the source as well as the absence of heavy metal content (ie: lead, mercury). The effects of fatty acid usage are normally noticeable in an average of 4-8 weeks and have the most therapeutic effect when Omega-3s (Flaxseed, Fish Oil) and Omega-6s (Evening Primrose, Borage Oil) are taken together.
